ABSTRACT

LSE law students have shown that, with supervision, they can run a part-time legal advice service for the benefit of fellow students and other members of the University. In the recent Supreme Court case which extended the right of counsel to misdemeanour cases involving jail sentences, Mr. Justice Brennan's opinion mentioned law students as one source of legal counsel. Most law students work fairly hard but it would probably be true to say that few are much excited by what they are doing. Equally, virtually none have yet thought of how to get the student out of the library and into the community. The next stage is to see whether the service, which has so far been confined to the School itself, can be expanded to take in some form of community action. Finally, it is obvious that clinical education may have important benefits to the community served.
