ABSTRACT

This chapter follows a previous chapter about optimization in wireless sensor networks (WSNs); however, Chapter 6 will focus on a more narrowed topic in WSN optimization, called coverage optimization, and will cover the following content: First, the background about WSN optimization will be slightly repeated, with more in-depth knowledge regarding different ways to measure the quality of WSNs system with focus on the coverage. The coverage optimization problem will be broken down into subcategories with conventional and adapted problem formulations from the literature along with elaboration about why soft computing is suitable to tackle these problems. Works on this topic will be discussed in terms of time complexity and quality of solutions. After that, the most current algorithms proposed to solve the different coverage optimization problems will be introduced to the readers along with their performance evaluation in comparison with each other. Finally, Chapter 6 ends with a discussion about potential directions to exploit and better problem solving in the future.
