ABSTRACT

Large portion of municipal solid waste (MSW) has to be stored in valleys or landfills around cities in China. There are always potential risks of slope failure for those solid wastes. This paper presents the centrifuge model tests to simulate the various MSW slopes on horizontal ground and inclined ground. Artificial MSW materials with different mix ratio were adopted to simulate different store ages of waste. Models with different section layouts were tested to failure respectively by using a newly developed rotating container in the swing basket, to increase the slope angle until model collapse. The test results show that the old age landfill slope is generally stable than the middle age one with the same boundary condition, and for the landfill with leachate inside, slope failure can be easily activated when the slope toe loss its strength at certain leachate level. A simple method is presented in this paper to estimate the safety reservation of the model slope based on slope stability analysis together with the slope failure information from centrifuge model tests.
