ABSTRACT

Sport addresses the interactions between psychology and athletic performance, including the psychological aspects of optimal athletic performance; the psychological well-being of athletes, teams, coaches and sport organizations; and the connection between physical and psychological functioning. Sport psychology could be considered a specialization within the general field of performance psychology. Performance focuses on the psychology of human performance in domains such as athletics, the performing arts, medicine, firefighting, law enforcement, military operations, business and music. Medical and legal education provides precedent, although the pathways and legal regulations for those fields are much clearer than in many Sport, Exercise and Performance Psychology (SEPP) tracks, except for clinical psychology, which follows a medical model. Getting licensed is a common question within the field of SEPP, although typically varies internationally with the different legal and regulatory issues across the world. Resources through professional organizations like the American Psychological Association and Association for Applied Sports Psychology can also help provide guides or objective material.
