ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses communication in depth by examining the communication pathway, keys to effectively sending and receiving messages, potential disruptions along the communication pathway and the application of the communication processes in sport, exercise and performance. The communication that occurs between these individuals or groups can have an effect on the success of the team and play an important role in driving the culture of the team. The organizational structure of a professional team may require athletes and coaches to communicate with the general manager, the ownership, the media and the fan base. Theories of communication can be organized into the following seven traditions: rhetorical, semiotic, phenomenological, cybernetic, sociocultural, critical and sociopsychological. There are numerous studies that have cited communication as a critical component in the coach-athlete relationship. Research examining the relationships between mobile devices and the quality of face-to-face, in-person social interactions suggests that the presence of mobile devices detracts from the quality of social interactions.
