ABSTRACT

Virtual environments provide a natural setting for a wide range of information visualization applications, particularly when the information to be visualized is defined on a three-dimensional (3-D) domain (Bryson, 1996). This chapter provides an overview of the issues that arise when designing and implementing an information visualization application in a virtual environment. Many design issues that arise (e.g., issues of display or user tracking) are common to any application of virtual environments. In this chapter, the focus is on those issues that are special to information visualization applications, as application issues of wider concern are addressed elsewhere (see chaps. 42-55, this volume).
