ABSTRACT
I INTRODUCTION Interest in spinal cord injury dates back to the time of Galen. Galen experimented by making longitudinal and transverse cuts to the spinal cord of animals (1). Most modern advancements, however, can be credited to the pioneering work of Guttmann, including the opening of the first dedicated spinal unit in 1944 at Stoke Mandeville Hospital in England (2).
