I TIMING OF SURGERY IN SPINAL CORD INJURY As many as 10,000 people a year sustain and survive spinal cord injury (SCI) and approximately 200,000 people live with some degree of SCI in the United States today. Many of the recent medical developments in the treatment of SCI have been related to injury prevention and rehabilitation. Advances in pharmacological therapy have been shown to have a positive effect on preventing progression and even improving neurological function following SCI.
