ABSTRACT

Hypoglycemia impedes attainment of optimal glycemia. The benefits of excellent glycemia in reducing diabetes complications are clearer than ever. Despite this, those wishing to decrease the risk of microvascular complications through glycemic control inevitably face an increased risk of hypoglycemia, often without warning symptoms and potentially with severe consequences. This is especially true for those with type 1 diabetes mellitus, but also for some with type 2 diabetes mellitus (see Figure 1).
