ABSTRACT

EVOLUTION OF POWERED LIPOSUCTION DEVICES Liposuction was originally developed by Giorgio and Arpad Fischer in Italy in 1975 [1]. When the Fischers first began to develop tools for this new technique, they assumed that some sort of cutting instrument would be required to efficiently remove subcutaneous tissue. Up to this date, all attempts at removing fat had been based on curettage. Eventually, however, the Fischers settled on blunt tipped cannulas for tunneling through the fat [2]. To assist, however, in this effort, they designed blunt instruments with sharp blades contained within the shafts. This so called cellusuciatome was a cannula with a removable blunt tip and internal blades to break up aspirated fat. Some of the Fischers’ designs incorporated a motorized system to move the blades within the shaft of the cannula.
