ABSTRACT

The Institute of Medicine (IOM) issued a national call in 2001 for the rebuilding of the healthcare delivery system in the United States. This initiative sought the implementation of safer, more effective, patient-centered healthcare. The IOM specifically advocated for interdisciplinary collaboration, evidence-based practice, and quality improvement initiatives as a means toward improved patient outcomes (1). In practice, cardiology is one medical specialty that has continually demonstrated a desire to collaborate with other healthcare providers in the acute care and ambulatory setting. Clinical pharmacy services represent one healthcare discipline that has been invited to participate as a member of the interdisciplinary team in the outpatient cardiology setting. Several roles of the clinical pharmacist in the outpatient cardiology clinic will be highlighted in this chapter. Prior to a discussion of specific cardiology clinics in which clinical pharmacists participate, a brief discussion of clinical pharmacist training will be presented.
