I. Introduction

This book aims to describe the new developments in the assessment of pulmonary

ventilatory and vascular disorders. However, it cannot be emphasized enough

that the majority of patients with chest diseases are currently managed using

fairly basic radiological techniques and lung function tests. This is due to

factors such as convenience of access, costs of investigations, and experience

with these techniques. This chapter will give a brief review of the most

commonly used techniques. It does not aim to be complete, but rather highlights

the techniques and their role in the routine care of patients with chest diseases.

For the interested reader, excellent textbooks with detailed description of

technique and indications for these tests exist (1-3).
