ABSTRACT

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is rapidly becoming a major and global public health problem. The implementation of Detection and Prevention (D&P) of CKD programs as well as the nature of renal services needed to be practiced in many of the developing world requires a serious and innovative look at the nature of nephrology training and even at the definition of a nephrologist in some part of the world. The Western definition of a nephrologist is that of a physician who provides a competent and comprehensive range of renal services based on an in depth and lengthy training leading to a sound knowledge and expertise in the field. The Regional Nephrology School syllabus will be based on the above-described training requirement. Some of the D&P programs have focused on the entire population, while others targeted a specific group within the population.
