ABSTRACT
The 19th-century German pathologist Rudolf Virchow was one of the first
physicians to characterize pulmonary embolism (PE), christening the phenomenon
“Embolia” (1). Since that time, tens of thousands of publications have addressed
the spectrum of venous thromboembolic disease, yet more controversy and question
surrounds this particular ailment than perhaps any other disease process in medicine.
