ABSTRACT

This chapter analyzes one component of e-health, the body area network (BAN). It provides overview of the Human++ research program, which is targeted at developing key technologies and components for future wireless BANs for health monitoring applications. Many national health services struggle in the face of financial resource constraints and shortages of skilled labor. In wealthier nations, consumer demand increases, leading to a higher spend on health care. e-Health technology, enabling wireless and mobile-based health care services, is increasingly coined as the revolutionizing enabler for the next decades to come. e-Health is claimed to offer the potential to reduce costs, deliver remote health services, and increase the delivery efficiency in real time. In an emerging world of personal wellness, access to basic and vital health care data empowers the patient to further improve his quality of life.
