Th is chapter focuses on advances in hostage/barricade crisis negotiation. In particular, this chapter examines how mental health consultants can provide assistance to law enforcement negotiators. Th erefore, the following discussion concentrates, in part, on the ways in which a crisis incident can be classifi ed, discusses diff erent negotiation techniques and methods of negotiation analyses, explores the empirical bases that currently support these fi ndings, and, fi nally, examines the impact, on the victims, of being taken hostage and how best to ameliorate that impact.
