ABSTRACT

The International Federation for Information and Documentation (FID) was a not-for-profit organization formed out of the former Institut International de Bibliographie (IIB). The initial goal of the IIB was to provide encouragement for the study of classification in general, and to promote a uniform and international system of classification in particular. The IIB established the Repertoire Bibliographique Universel (RBU) classification scheme for library and documentation materials, predicated upon the Dewey Decimal Classification system. Later this classification scheme evolved into the Universal Decimal Classification system (UDC), the name by which it is still known today. For reasons discussed, the FID has now been dissolved.
