ABSTRACT

Modern organizations are exploring holistic approaches to managing records, information, and knowledge. The value and use of institutional records are optimized when records management and archival activities are coordinated and closely aligned according to a common set of goals and principles. Integration of records management and archives functions, along with the adoption of newer conceptual models for managing the life cycle of institutional records, have led to revised methods and best practices. Archival processes for “in-house” records may diverge in some ways from those for collecting repositories. Information professionals are expanding their roles and working collaboratively to manage and preserve electronic records. Societal attitudes about transparency and free access to information are changing the ways that institutions think about their information assets.
