ABSTRACT

The entry presents a brief cultural history of Slovakia while concentrating on the development of libraries, archives, and museums and the related disciplines. An overview is provided of the multiple kinds of libraries, museums, and archives with particular attention given to major representative examples. The history of relevant legislation and policy is provided along with a discussion of the contemporary legislative environment. In conclusion, the tendency toward collaboration of libraries, archives, and museums is emphasized. Future plans for libraries, archives, and museums concentrate on national projects of cultural heritage digitization and building of digital cultural portals.
