ABSTRACT
This entry offers a brief introduction to volunteerism in museums, science centers, historical societies and sites, and related mission-driven cultural institutions. It discusses the primary models and categories of public and institutional service to these cultural institutions, in common with and distinct from libraries. It points to the ways in which trends in population impact and change volunteerism and provides a guide to the growing bibliography and professional literature concerned with volunteerism and volunteer management.
