ABSTRACT

This entry provides an overview of libraries and library services in New Zealand Aotearoa. Taking as a starting point British colonization in 1840 the entry follows the development through until the present day. In addition to outlining the four major library sectors of public, academic, school, and special libraries, it also includes detail of the National Library of New Zealand. Education for librarianship in New Zealand is described along with descriptions of professional associations. Finally, some issues and challenges in New Zealand libraries are identified.
