ABSTRACT

This chapter compiles literature from a psychosociocultural model perspective based on the work of Gloria and Rodriguez. The psychosociocultural model is used as a standpoint to understand how Latinas persevere in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics during college. This review highlights how aspects like family, the self, and peers can influence resilience. The Latina resilience model considers a continuous acknowledgment of resilience throughout life and clearly identifies as a non-deficit model, asset-based approach. The Latina resilience model focuses the model’s concepts specifically on the Latinas and their unique experiences. Yosso, T. J. introduced the cultural capital wealth (CCW) model to capture the talents, the strengths, and the experiences that Students of the Color bring with them to their college environment. The CCW model represents a framework to understand how Students of Color access and experience college from a strengths-based perspective.
