ABSTRACT

In 2008 the non-governmental organization Make a Memory (MaM) was founded in the Netherlands. This organization provides photo series for parents suffering the loss of a child with the aim to create memories to help them come to terms with their grief. In line with the increasing multiculturality in the Netherlands, MaM photographers encounter more and more families with different cultural backgrounds. This chapter reports on the research that resulted in advice for the photographers. The research included interviews with photographers, bereaved parents, medical experts, an imam and a priest. One of the findings of the research was that taking pictures of (deceased) children might still be a taboo in some cultures. Photographers should be aware of these potential misunderstandings. MaM was advised to organise recurrent reflection sessions with their members on these issues.
