Moving onto, into and between the boxes

Surfaces and volumes as the triggers for children’s movement
WithParamita Atmodiwirjo, Yandi Andri Yatmo

This case study illustrates an approach to promote the children’s creativity and freedom of movement through interaction with a series of boxes as architectural elements that contain surfaces and volumes. A creative movement exercise was performed by the primary school-age children to figure out the range of possibilities of what they can do with boxes. Through this exercise, the children explore the interaction of their physical bodies with the surfaces and volumes of the sets of cardboard boxes. The boxes as the physical objects become the trigger for the children for learning various possibilities of postures, movements and activities whilst at the same time exploring about orientation, direction and configuration of surfaces and volumes.
