ABSTRACT

Social work is guided by a few simple notions: that people are built for connection, that every person matters, that readers have a responsibility to uphold the dignity of all those we meet, and that attentive, empathic listening is the gateway to real, personal, and social change. Instead, listening, particularly with intentional therapeutic attention, esteems connection. This connection, which is central to social work, can lead to individual and systemic change. Various multimedia tools have shown to enrich the learning experience for social work students. Various experts within the field of social work provide insights and enhanced considerations of each chapter’s themes, while other contributors provide personal narratives of their lived experiences. Although most humans are acquainted with grief, loss and suffering are particularly painful and difficult to comprehend at early stages of development. Of particular interest to social work educators is a call to action to educate on micro and macro levels of service.
