ABSTRACT

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) carries an increased risk of weight gain and also of disordered eating, including binge eating. Yet weight loss is often recommended as a strategy for managing PCOS. Most women with PCOS diet extensively in an attempt to accomplish the weight loss that will help them get pregnant or feel better. This chapter discusses unique issues facing Black women with PCOS and the associated challenges with eating and weight, including elevated risk for cardiovascular disease, lack of quality health care, mistrust of health care providers, access to healthy food options, family members’ resistance to lifestyle changes, and unwillingness to seek care for mental health.
