ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at Black women’s experience of disordered eating through the lens of spirituality and religious community. Eating disorder treatment facilities often neglect the spiritual aspect of recovery, yet it is implausible to consider healing in the African American culture without including faith. When a treatment plan lacks the spiritual element or foundation on which the person relies, the plan will be ineffective, and the client will easily return to the disordered behavior that is familiar. Lasting recovery is wholly dependent on vital spiritual experiences and the continued maintenance of the spiritual condition.
