ABSTRACT
Using John Cage’s composition 4′33″ as starting point, this contribution looks at the performative aspects of concerts. Concerts are “cultural performances,” in the sense developed by Milton Singer: they possess a ritual dimension as well as eventfulness. Musical perception is described as a somatic process, whereby musical performances yield specific forms of community.
