ABSTRACT

This text introduces geographical marginality as a creative force in theatre, defining it as post-mainstream based on a geo-cultural perspective. This metaphorical term explains and gives some tools to deconstruct a traditional mainstream orientation in explaining what is new in theatre. Post-mainstream is here based on a definition of the North, and exemplified with Scandinavian developments intermediated by the new festivals since the 1980s in Copenhagen, Bergen and Québec. It is however, to be seen as a global movement.
