ABSTRACT

Ada Leverson was born in 1862 and died in 1933. Her six novels, originally published between 1907 and 1916 were reissued in 1951. The themes of her ‘comedies’ are love and friendship. She was an extremely witty writer yet there is an undertone of ironic tragedy. To the literary world she was known as ‘The Sphinx’. The three books about Edith Ottley—Love’s Shadow, Tenterhooks and Love at Second Sight are generally agreed to be her best. The public at large knew her best for her loyal friendship with Oscar Wilde.
