ABSTRACT

The incidence of stroke in young adults has increased in various countries due to a decrease in quality of life and reduced productivity. Disadvantages of stroke are more severe in younger patients than in older patients, placing a burden on the sufferers. The appropriate prevention is to reduce vascular risk factors that can cause ischemic stroke. This research aimed to determine the correlation of vascular risk factors with the prevalence of stroke in young adults. This research used a quantitative descriptive method and a cross-sectional design. Data analysis was done via frequency distribution. Hospitalized patients’ medical records at the neurology ward in the hospital in Bandung, Indonesia, from August 2016 to August 2018 were consulted. These data were classified based on the patients’ age, gender, and risk factors. The results of this research showed that women have the same risk factors as men aged 36–40 years old. The researchers concluded that vascular risk factors increasing blood sugar level, hypertension, and dyslipidemia were less significant in causing the occurrence of ischemic stroke in young adults while gout in young adults was the main risk factor for ischemic stroke. The early detection of risk factors is very important in preventing the occurrence of ischemic stroke in young adults.
