ABSTRACT

The incidence of scabies, especially in Islamic boarding schools (pesantren), is still a problem in Bandung City, Indonesia. Previous studies found multifactorial causes for scabies that are difficult to eliminate. Various efforts have been made to treat and eliminate scabies, including the introduction of healthy and clean-living behaviors (PHBS). This study aimed to describe the use of a PHBS pocketbook to promote healthy and clean-living behaviors among students in pesantren in Bandung. Screening for scabies was carried out on 18 pesantren selected from around Bandung using a purposive sampling method. A PHBS pocketbook, especially on scabies prevention, was introduced in the pesantren with the highest incidence of scabies. An assessment of PHBS knowledge and scabies using pretest and posttest methods was performed using the Wilcoxon test. The research was conducted from February to August 2019 in Bandung. Results showed the students’ level of knowledge about PHBS and prevention of scabies was good. However, the knowledge did not contribute to PHBS. In conclusion, the level of knowledge of PHBS is not related to a teaching material.
