ABSTRACT

Typhoid fever is an acute disease caused by the Salmonella typhi bacterium. The spread of the bacteria is mainly oral-fecal with the intermediary of contaminated water and cooking. Many people in Indonesia do not care about environmental cleanliness, especially in densely populated cities such as Jakarta. Varied clinical symptoms and laboratory results make diagnosis difficult. Therefore, research needs to be done to detect clinical symptoms commonly found in typhoid fever patients. To examine the clinical symptoms, laboratory results for adults with typhoid fever in January–March 2018 were acquired. This study was a retrospective descriptive study using a cross-sectional study design with a total sample of 84 medical records. The study was conducted from October to December 2018 at Hospital X, East Jakarta. Data were obtained from patients’ medical records. Adult typhoid fever patients were hospitalized in Hospital X: 32.24% were aged 19–24 years, 58.33% were female, and 40.48% stayed for 3 days with an average visit length of 3.06 days. Patients who had a fever were as much as 92.86%. Widal O titer was 1/320 positive at 34.52% and H titer was 1/160 positive at 21.43%, normal Hb at 54.76%, normal leukocytes at 50%, and normal platelets at 77.39%. Typhoid fever often occurs in young adults who have anemia.
