ABSTRACT

This chapter illustrates the main milestones and processes that students went through during their enrolment in an elective 15-week course on education for sustainable development (SD). Education for SD has been conceptualized differently in terms of its content, pedagogy, and the competences and skills needed. The main reason behind this variation is that SD by nature is contested, due to the different perspectives and interests in the social issues it deals with. Social responsibility is one of the major attitudes that can enhance the cohesion and unity of any society. Universities and higher education institutions are part of any society and can be perceived as entities similar in some aspects to corporates due to their social obligations and responsibilities. Higher education institutions are perceived to have a major role “tied so intricately to economic, social and environmental fabric of the modern world”.
