Fighting corruption in a hostile environment
This chapter examines the work of the Peruvian Special Prosecution Team for the Lava Jato case. Despite Peru’s long history of graft and impunity, authorities are successfully overseeing this major case under challenging conditions with limited resources. To date, every president since the return to democracy is allegedly involved in Lava Jato. At the same time, the country has recouped nearly 20 million USD as part of an asset recovery effort, which is the most significant amount recovered in Peruvian history. This chapter critically examines the internal and external threats to the Lava Jato probe, as well as the opportunities and breakthrough during the investigations.
