ABSTRACT

The exposure to radon in homes is one of the most important causes of lung cancer deaths worldwide. In view of the significant health effects, radon should be considered among the natural risks that urban and territorial planning has to manage, which suggests the possibility of recognizing different lines of action, corresponding to the various levels of planning. The proposed methodology, applied to the municipality of Eboli (SA), aims to reduce the population’s residential exposure to radon risk in the municipal urban plan. To this purpose the plan addresses, the mitigation of risk levels in existing settlements on the one hand, and the prevention of popolation’s exposure in new buildings of future settlements on the other, by requiring differentiated protection levels according to the risk and hazard levels respectively. Finally, specific guidelines to be attached to the plan indicate how to implement protection levels required.
