ABSTRACT

Visually impaired populations have been widely ignored in the past. This paper focuses on the problems that visibly impaired have while being in a shared space. The movement of persons in a shared space depends a lot on the sense of sight, as it’s a single space used by different users with no barriers. The issue has attracted much debate and discussion. This work shows how persons with visual impairment can use the shared space in a better and safer way. I choose Via Garibaldi in Turin, Italy for my fieldwork using different methods through the site visits individually and with the user/experts which helped me in understanding that how they co- exist with the other users in a shared space and what problems they had while walking. The results attained helped me to formulate the suggestions to improve the shared space of Via Garibaldi for visually impaired persons.
