ABSTRACT

Centres responsible for the development of academic staff and students face conceptual, structural and practical challenges. These challenges often manifest as contestations between academic development units and academic faculties over their role. This chapter explores the practice of programme renewal as a potential area of contestation regarding the legitimate participation of academic development units. The study draws on LCT tools to explore the basis for achieving successful programme renewal from the perspectives of academic developers and lecturers respectively. Further, it considers explanations for different approaches to legitimate programme renewal practice. The chapter considers the implications of different claims to legitimacy for the ongoing process of programme renewal and concludes with recommendations for collaborative programme renewal practices.
