ABSTRACT

In September 2015, the United Nations member countries adopted the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Along with these agreed goals are recommendations on indicators to measure their achievement. This research seeks to answer one primary and two secondary research questions:

Primary question – Are existing sustainability assessment tools applicable to Small island developing states (SIDS), based on their unique characteristics?

Secondary questions:

If they are not, should a SIDS-specific tool be developed?

What would be the features of such a tool?

This research provides a comparative policy analysis of the use of sustainability indicator systems and their suitability for SIDS. This research paper focusses on concepts such as sustainability, indicators of sustainability and Small Island Developing States.
