ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the preparations for the Tokyo 2020 Games from a language policy point of view. Starting with a look at the situation back in 1964, when Tokyo was first hosting the Summer Olympics, the chapter provides a fast-forward review of language policy schemes aimed at making Tokyo a more easily understandable site, for foreign residents and visitors alike. As the analysis shows, Tokyo at the eve of the 2020 event is a place more multilingual than it has ever been before.
