ABSTRACT

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a new paradigm foreseen as a global network of machines and devices capable of interacting with each other. One such example is the connected car, which is a refined and upgraded form in the automobile market. Connected cars act as not only means of transportation, but also new kinds of connected platforms of evolved human life, with multiple functionalities such as communication, computing, data processing and entertainment. Connected cars use big data technologies as the computation framework for gathering and analyzing a large volume of data generated in all aspects of vehicle operations. Since these data are vital for many connected car applications, a vehicle’s analytical data source can be built using the Hadoop framework. This pile of data source allows different connected car industries in the ecosystem to access the data they need for connected car applications.

The leading giants Google, Microsoft, and Amazon offer a framework for connected vehicle platform. Using these frameworks, a variety of applications, such as location-based services, remote vehicle diagnostics and health monitoring, predictive analytics and required maintenance alerts, voice interaction, navigation, media streaming services, vehicle safety and security services, can be developed. This chapter introduces the connected car, the technologies that hold up the connected car, and big data support and elaborates the solutions provided by forefront companies. University
