ABSTRACT

A diverse range of factors threatens the security and privacy of users when searching and using online services and resources in libraries. Ensuring the privacy of library users and providing a safe and secure environment in which to seek and use information resources have always been central values for information professionals, and encapsulated in guidelines and codes of practice issued by the International Federation of Library Associations and those of library associations around the world. Information professionals also have a legal responsibility to ensure that relevant legislation relating to the privacy of personal data is observed. Developing the digital literacy skills of library users requires more than updating library privacy policies however; it is also crucial that information professionals are proactive in ensuring that users are aware of and understand the implications of such policies.
