ABSTRACT

Interactions between an organism’s behavior and the environment are frequently classified as either simple or complex. Simple interactions are defined by a direct empirical relationship between explicit environmental conditions and overt behavior. By contrast, complex interactions are designated by an indirect or conditional (empirical) relationship between environment and behavior, or by behaviors that involve a heterogeneous sequence of responses. In both instances, the criteria of classification are empirical: observed behavior, and the environmental conditions under which the behavior occurs.
