ABSTRACT

Until 1964 the study of psychology in Mexico was centered mainly in Mexico City. The general orientation was mentalistic, with a great emphasis on psychoanalysis. Nevertheless, for the last two or three years, an increasing interest in experimental psychology, especially learning theory, had developed among a minority of students. As a consequence of this, in 1964 a group of young psychologists from the National University had the opportunity to create a new Department of Psychology at the University of Veracruz, in Xalapa (Diaz-Guerrero, 1966). This new Department mounted an effort to introduce, for the first time, an experimental approach to the teaching and application of psychology.
