ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we examine the types of counting initially found in young children and describe how these counting types are related to children’s solutions of addition and subtraction problems. We: (1) describe the first three counting types used by young children, all of which are prenumerical; (2) describe children’s solutions to arithmetical tasks that involve these counting types; and (3) argue that the counting type a child can use is directly correlated with the child’s method of solving arithmetical tasks.
