ABSTRACT

The unpredictable nature of hazards associated with harmful biological agents makes it a global challenge to improve solutions that minimise the risk of infection resulting from occupational or non-occupational exposure. Only cooperation of different expert groups can contribute to an increased safety of those at risk. This book provides the basic information and the latest research results, which are necessary to carry out the aforementioned tasks. It aims to provide information useful for the reader at the stage of acquiring and improving knowledge about the correct shaping of the principles of safe work environment in the conditions where workers might be exposed to harmful bioaerosols.

Particular emphasis is placed on presenting the basic characteristics of biological factors and their effects on the human body. The aspects of individual respiratory protection against such hazards are discussed in detail. Phenomena related to the microbial growth in filtering materials are presented along with the description of specific risks for users of respiratory protective devices. Also, practical aspects concerning the mitigation of risks associated with the use of filtering equipment for protection against bioaerosol are pointed out and discussed.

While reading the book, the readers will find answers to all questions related to the risk assessment of the exposure to biological agents and proper selection respiratory protective devices. They will also find out how to correctly use these devices to minimize the risk of infection spreading due to the transmission of harmful biological agents, e.g. while donning and doffing the equipment.
