ABSTRACT

Stern’s essay reviews the state of Exile Studies—its foundation, present incarnation, and possible future. Reconsidering such fundamental concepts as home—heimat—and rethinking basic conceptual beliefs about exile that he and other founders of the field originally held dear, Stern’s piece speaks to and with a community of primarily German-speaking scholars, Jewish and non-Jewish alike. Reflecting upon his own scholarly life, Stern concludes by inviting a global community of scholars to follow in his footsteps, continuing the study of exile for as long as, and wherever it might be, manifested.
