ABSTRACT

Acoustic quality is a general term used to describe acoustic properties of a utility space contributing to subjective positive impressions experienced by a human. The acoustic quality of rooms is an issue of special importance in classrooms where, with the age of pupils borne in mind, optimum conditions for transmission of verbal messages should be ensured. This chapter presents a method for acoustic assessment of classrooms based on a single-number global index taking into account a number of different factors affecting the ultimate assessment result. Partial indexes are defined and their individual weights adopted on the grounds of analysis of factors decisive for assessment of whether a room in question meets specific requirements of room acoustics. Application of the proposed method is presented in the form of results of a trial acoustic quality assessment carried out in nine selected primary school classrooms.
