ABSTRACT

The chapter discusses the legal acts or guidelines applicable at the local or national level to improve the hygiene quality of indoor spaces that have been affected by bio-corrosion. Particular emphasis was placed on changes in general regulations and the Building Code, related, among others, to the reduction of moisture levels in buildings. They most often concern ventilation systems, heating, drainage, resistance of the building structure to outdoor (atmospheric) conditions and the use of building materials resistant to moisture and moulds, and conducting certification systems for specialists and companies operating as mycological experts. Key points of national and international programmes promoting activities to improve indoor air quality were also analysed. The most important is to raise the general awareness of building designers, owners and users about health risks associated with bio-corrosion of building materials. The chapter also focuses on microbiological expertise, which should include the identification of any defects and anomalies within the building that may contribute to the formation and development of bio-corrosion.
