ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the most important biological agents that take part in microbiological corrosion of buildings. Fungi and particles of fungal origin such as allergens, glucans and mycotoxins as well as volatile organic compounds are discussed in detail. Moreover, bacteria (including actinomycetes) with their allergens and immunoactive compounds such as peptidoglycans and endotoxins as well as viruses are also presented. In each case, the most important features of microbial pollutants posing a threat to human health in water-damaged buildings have been characterized. Based on an extensive scientific literature review, the reader is introduced to the problem of how dampness can affect the quality of indoor environment.
